Mike, I totally agree with you. A 60 OMC short shaft tiller is the motor I would want. The 3 cylinder tiller should be the same. I would try it first. You can always add an tube to the handle if you need it longer. There is a lot more motor torque on a SLT hull compared to a normal hull. When we ran the 30 short shaft on the 12 footer the bow got very light and any cross wind was a challenge. I am sure the southern boys with their Dixie boats have the bow shaped curve down to stop that problem and the sides are low for the same reason. The only way to find out is try it.

Our buddy at the cottage has a 13' whaler with a 2004 2cyl johnson 40. With one guy in the boat trimmed out its a blast. Can only imagine the 11'er with a 2cyl 60 or even the 40

Whaler is a proven hull and available for potential entry level racers AND it does double duty as a cottage boat.
I'm with you on that subject. Small boats put the biggest grin on for the least $$. We really like our Aquarius T-Cat but the price of admission is relatively high and then there's the availability issue.
We should talk soon as I'm ready to pull the trigger on another small boat. Sold my big motor and the Hydrostream hull is next. I just wanna have fun and hey, I'm on Scugog... small lake where the only waves are created by wind and big boats.

I'm seeing a bit of progress too, found a tiller handle for my 60, redid all the seals in the lower unit and repaired the skeg, motor is installed and runs great but the kill switch doesn't work so still working on a few little issues but getting close to the maiden voyage, just in time for a bit of walleye fishing.

The small Whaler is a good fit for me. I don't need to depend on other people's help to get it usable with the motors I have. It doesn't require any extra bracing or repairs. I just need to add a small, light aluminum transom bracket so I can mount several different motors and not make any additional holes in the transom. I can do that. It will not be as fast as a tin boat [unless I put an 8 inch pad on the bottom]. But it will run low 40's with the 30 yamaha as is. Initially it will be a tiller cottage boat.
