I was browsing TORC's website the other day and found this...

MiniCat
Ages 9+
Similar to above but using 15hp stock motors. Driver must be between 9 and 15 and the co-pilot has to be over 9.

I believe the idea was to use a small aquarius boat?

Anyways, I bought a cheap Saturn 9'6" Mini Cat in the summer as a tender for our old Chris Craft cruiser.
The boat costs about $600 plus shipping brand new. I am very impressed with the quality of these boats! We run a 9.9 Johnson on it and it runs just over 20mph. We tried a Merc 15 on it as well. When running solo, I just about flipped it over! LOL! I actually had to sit on the opposite side of the boat to counter torque steer. With myself and one kid, it was perfect. We ran 26mph with a stock 9p prop. It doesn't have high jackers and rides on a running surface glued to the tubes. It rolls up easily and fits in a bag that comes with it. I wish I had a picture of us running it, but Here is a picture I found online.

This might be a super cheap junior Thundercat Class! With a boat and motor that fits in your trunk! If not, I thought you guys might like the info if you are shopping for a dinghy. :)

Neat idea. If people want to go this route, I'm all for it. The boat is too short to meet the current MiniCat rules, but that could be adjusted if 9.9 were used for the class instead of 15's. Boat is rated for 9.9. Or tested with 15's and see result... don't want two fly weight 9 years olds to get into trouble. Would need to add some handles and righting ropes... easily done. that's about it likely. No highjackers would be big performance difference to a boat with them... but to be honest I don't picture anyone buying a real $5500 minicat hull. Something like this might be the ticket for cheap entry to fun racing! Or could create Jr MiniCat for 9.9hp.

You should bring it to a race and show it off.

Oh, and the MiniCat class in Bermuda and another country (forget which one) uses 6hp because of their countries boating laws. They seem to have a blast :)

That's so cool Andrew!! I will bring it to Waterford for testing for sure! Its just right with a 9.9. With a 15 it exhibits some handling problems! ...especially solo!!

I'll get Evan and his sister or cousins to do some testing in the spring! 8-)

That's very cool Don! ... I still think this class would be a lot of fun for kids for very little money.

Now when dad's not watching, here is how he drives the boat.
