Costs sink annual boat races
The roar on the river is over. The Kankakee Regatta and Festival Committee announced Wednesday that the 30-year revived tradition of Labor Day weekend boat racing has ended.
"It's absolutely painful to see this happen. These races were a part of my childhood," said 2013 chairman Brad Kuntz. "But the decision was made to not pursue hosting the 2014 Regatta and the decision has been made to cancel the event."
The four-day end-of-summer party involved hundreds of competitors and thousands of fans, but did not generate enough revenue to justify the financial risk. Last year, for example, the event was blessed with perfect weather, but — even with considerable local sponsorship — generated less than $1,000 in proceeds — after expenses were paid.
