Going to look a J-craft project boat, I have only seen a picture at this point. But I notice it's missing the "hump" where your elbow would be if your sitting in it. Every J I have seen online has this hump? The guy who owns it is a co-worker/friend and has owned it for 15+ years. He swears it's a 16-17' J-craft, it has the "barrel" back. What 3 letters should I see on the HIN assuming it has one? Has anyone else ever seen a J without the "hump" at the mid point around the cockpit?

I've never seen a J without the hump you describe.
A pic of what you're going to look at would help. While it may not be a J it might be worth saving, just don't pay much.
IMO a project hull needs to be nearly free to justify the expense and time it takes to bring one back from the dead.
Even then you gotta ask, what's your time worth?

When I was boat shopping, it seemed that everything that wasn't identifiable in person was represented/advertized as either a j-craft or a sidewinder. Be wary, as Tom said, gonna have to be cheap if you're getting into a project. Post some pics if you can, someone will be able to id it here

The hump that you're referring to was introduced to the deck mould to facilitate the installation of an optional windshield.
The older models, like the one in the kijiji ad were never intended to get a windshield.
Coolest J ever.......1975 (maybe 76) bright yellow 19' with TWIN 150 towers of power!!

Flew Delta Kites behind an orange J with twins on Kempenfelt Bay in late 70's, it was very cool.

The one I'm referring to had a winch bolted to the floor......carried 1000' of line for flying....you guessed it..delta kites!!
Tow vehicle of choice back then.......yellow Corvette.
Those were the days!!

Remember this one as being part of a ski club and ya, it had a winch.
At 350' one doesn't remember much other than the line seems to go straight down. Quite the experience.
