That's not bad...considering a new 9.9 is almost $3k...or a used A motor is $2k.

$2k is not realistic for that OMC on kijiji to a racer... a few hundred high.

More comparable would be a fully race prepped and sealed Yamato 302 (30 hp, 60mph), fresh from Japan, with competitive USA prop for $2660. Rebuild cost by dealer, $250 (hone/pistons/rings). Add $350 or so and you can race this single engine in 4-5 classes at TORC races.

Perfect so for the price of one T750 toaster 50hp you can have 2 motors and race in 5-6 TORC classes :). Where else can you race on this kind of budget??

For the stock class i can do 5400.00 on a new 50tldi short shaft, with a 5 year warranty that price is out the door plus tax no searching on Kijiji or eBay no cutting fabricating or twisting wrenches, parts can be bought in most towns where we race all over Ontario from the local marinas

like i said before once i hear back from skunk works on our race motor i will have a price on a brand new race ready 50 tldi that will rev 68-7000 rpm

The cost of a rebuildable 56 OMC sand cast power head has not changed, so for comparison lets say $700.00.
Boysen reeds $100.00
Final assembly cost unchanged

2012 Rules.
Machine shop $150.00 to do the head.

2013 suggested Rules IF YOU RAN THE COMPLETE PACKAGE
Billet head............................................$400.00
lightening flywheel.................................$200.00
Balancing crank.....................................$200.00
lightening crank.....................................$200,00
3 SST 60 sleeves...................................$400.00
Instal sleeves........................................$450.00
Match porting the block...........................$300.00
Clean up the intake runners and exhaust.... $150.00
Total $2300.00

I would think a $600 - $700 job in porting could clean up all your ports, match them and take them to SST-60 spec sizes from your existing sleeves. Why the cost of new sleeves and installing them? Also the head is an option for those who want to spend the money on it. It won't be changing performance so I think that price would even be a $1000 high would it not? Also some people say the lightning of parts doesn't even make a difference performance wise. I guess I won't know till I try it my self and compare but that money may not do anything other than have a cool looking flywheel and make the bearings last longer.

Todd my post wasn't to insinuate the toaster is expensive...because its obviously not. That is a killer deal for a great engine. I was just illustrating my point that any of these classes can still be done on a tight budget if need be.

Here are two examples of OMC 56 motors that HAD raced in T850

Scott Whittington's original motor was a race SST 60 that was professionally built by one of the best SST 60 builders
in the US. The dyno sheet was 102 hp at 6500 rpm. It made 90 plus hp between 5900 and 7500 rpm. It had 180 lbs compression and ran on 110 VP Marine fuel. Scott had 2 of these motors. The other one was 98 hp.

Scott was able to sell these motors and got a fishing 56r from me. He was totally disappointed with the fishing motor in his testing. We tried a few smaller props at the races and Scott ran better than he did with the original motors. Plus he did it with premium Shell fuel.

Ryley had exactly the same results. Erik now has that boat and motor. It runs 1 mph slower with an untouched 56 with just a head upgrade compared to the original full dressed SST60 motor.

Throwing money at the motor is not going to automatically make you winner. Top Gun or Todd can race any top 5 boat and make it a winner. Save your money!! Get RACING Experience first!! The motor is never as good after you flip the boat, so why sink a $3500.00 motor when an $800.00 one works!

And the grass roots nature of TORC also means most of us are DIY guys....so Don's numbers are more of a worst case scenario...which isn't all that bad...

But you are exactly right HK....

lol I know i just like to keep people in the loop from what i have seen on old motor pricing compared to new some deals you might think you are getting isn't even close once you have it on and running.

James Cole said he was going to ban me at the TIBS show as well, so i have to get the word out there fast.

I'll only be doing what I can do myself so I won't be sinking much money in engines, just time. The cost of a new prop is going to hurt a little. Just out of curiosity, are these dyno readings for the SST motors crankshaft hp or propshaft? I've always heard they were around 100hp but never knew where they were rating that

They are measured at the crank. I believe the last special SST 60 powerhead Blair Kants got from this builder cost him $5000.00. Most good SST60's dyno 90 to 95 hp in this range 5900 to 7500. The top ones run 95 to 102. The powerheads last 10 hours on an SST60 tunnel.

REMEMBER it is not horsepower that you feel when you accelerate. IT IS TORQUE! The fishing motors have more torque.
That is why there is little performance difference in the motors on a T boat. On the SST60 these motors turn 7700 to 8400 rpm. The top motors turn 8000 to 8500 and still make power thru the complete range. That is what costs the money in the build. The top costly ones pull off the dock thru every RPM range. On a T boat because of the difference in prop load being much greater, a lower ported motor with more torque in the 5900 to 7200 range works better. Listen to Todd's motor is a good example.

JUST TO ADD. We took a full race SST60 and ran it on Dave Whittington's 411 Critchfield. In testing the boat GPS 72 to 73 mph on a race course. We never raced the motor in that form in T Class. In 2011 that motor with a fishing head GPS 61.8 mph at Waterford. That was the same race that Ryley GPS 69 mph on the same course. Dave WON Sundays race! At Dunnville the same year we had a 152 compression head on the boat. It was a great race between Scott with the fishing motor at 160 compression and Dave with the 152 compression motor. The difference in the motor was very clear. Scott would pull Dave out of every corner. Dave would catch him at the end of every straight. On the last turn Dave tried to go around Scott on the outside only to hook the boat.
POINT IS: An SST 60 at 160 compression will have no advantage. Check the compression at the race and they are equal.

Guys NOTHING has really changed because of these rule changes. Because there were no inspections in previous years, some took advantage and didn't follow the rules at all. These rules actually tighten the class up. The compression test at every race will control the speeds. My guess is that the speeds will be slower this year. We have tested different combinations for 4 years!

If you had a full race SST60 on a Critchfield or VooDoo set up as a Lake Racer The best speed you will see is 75 mph.
That same combination in race trim 72 to 73 mph.
Put the 160 head on it and it runs 69 to 70 mph maybe slower

Just take a fishing 56 on the same boat with a 160 head on it. 68 mph. We have proved that.

The new suggested rules are NOT going to make much difference in the SST60. They will make a little difference with the fishing motors and they should benefit the Yamaha the most. That will even out the field even more. You will not have any 180 compression and over super stock motors running in 2013.

In previous years guys with 62 to 65 mph boats win because of a good start and good driving.

PUT YOUR MONEY INTO THE PROP NOT THE POWERHEAD!

The 2012 Current T BOAT Rules begin on page 18

http://cbfnc.ca/cbfnc/images/CBFNC/Rule ... %20nov.pdf

Make sure you know the current rules. Several suggestions mentioned on this thread are already in the current rules and they do not require any change. You must be careful to change all the rules that a affected by your suggested rule change. The addition rules could be in other T rules or in the general rules section.

I suggest you have the suggestions ready for review for the TORC meeting Feb. 2. That way you can get the initial feedback from the TORC membership prior to your presentation at the CBF convention meeting.
