EP class allowed the MVP boats from Quebec to race against the regular V bottom hulls. That didn’t sit well with the V hull racers. The EP displacement rule had already been increased from 49 cubic inch to 53 cubic inch to allow the 60 hp 52 cubic inch Mercury to race. The 53 displacement rule also allowed the 70 hp Yamaha to race. Then in early 1998 the class displacement rule was increased again from 53 to 60 cubic inch to allow the new 60 cubic inch mercury to race. That change upset the OMC racers and they wanted the 56 cubic inch OMC to race on a 15 inch midsection with a nitro gearcase. That rule didn’t past in 1998.
Meanwhile the OPC leaders were upset with the Canadian Boating Federation and within a couple of years formed Professional Powerboat Racing. EP in PPR became FV with the 60 cubic inch rule and the 56 OMC on a 15 midsection with a nitro gearcase was allowed.
The MOD VP hulls that raced in 1997 had few entries in the next couple of years and then disappeared. PPR also disappeared in a few years and there was no OPC racing here for years until 2006 UIM T class was introduced as part of CBF Stock Outboard Division

In 1998 the hometown of the MVP EP raceboats had their first and what ended up being there only CBF OPC race. With the 1997 successful showing at the Canadian Nationals they wanted to show case their boats in front of their home town.
They didn’t realize the difference the 70 Yamaha and the new 60 mercury had made to the class.
They had 3 MVP boats entered..2 with 650XS power....1 with a 52 cubic inch.mariner. Their boat that won the Nationals in 1997 finished 4 th.
The Yamaha and the 60 mercury were front runners that season until the 1998 Canadian Nationals were Steve W won with a 49 OMC.

There was another MOD VP hull that ran in EP after the Quebec boats . Speedmaster Marine purchased the Rankin Marine “POP” boat Sport C molds. He had Marty B add a center pod to the bottom making it a MOD VP. Marty used the lower portion of a delta boat for the center. Tammy W raced one for I believe one season and moved out of the class to race SST 60 in APR SUPERLEAGUE.
There must have been more than one boat made because others have showed up. So there are two versions of the Speedmaster Marine “Speedcat” . One is a pure tunnel and the other a MOD VP.
Brad C the builder of the original Mirage tunnel boats built a few 14 foot SST 60 tunnels with a center pod for drag racing. There was one of these drag tunnels in Ontario.
STV also built a small 12 to 13 ft. MOD VP tunnel. It didn’t perform as they had hoped and very few were made.

The best small 12 to 13 ft Raceboat tunnel was the Mirage “TomCat ll” closely matched by the Grand Prix. The short lived Mod C APBA class pushed these tunnels well passed there expected speed limits.

Formula 50 was another short lived small tunnel class in the early 1990’s. It was promoted by Hydro Tec for their 50 hp Yamaha triple. Hydro Tec’s hopes for a Yamaha dominated APBA class were dashed when the tohatsu 50D 50 hp dominated the class .

That ModVP hull really seemed to have an advantage over the rest of the field. He even backed off to keep it interesting. I have seen one of those boats advertised for sale here in Ontario years ago with a 650xs. Not sure if anyone ever put a 56 OMC on one of those hulls or not? Unfortunately the other ModVp hull seemed to have engine problems and didn’t have a good showing!

That MOD VP up for sale was Rick Attards #18.with the 650XS.
No question that MOD VP had a performance advantage over the V hulls.
They were a difficult boat to drive.
Mark Major who was VP of the OPC division of CBF at that time drove that same boat with a 60 hp 52 cubic inch mercury in a test session around a race course to see how it performed. Mark barrel rolled the boat in the test session.
I don’t think Rick Attard was ever pleased with the way his boat handled and he never raced it many times.
Would it be even faster with a 56? YES!
Another fact about the FV class in PPR once the 56 OMC was allowed. Craig Ferrier dominated that first season winning every race except the Nationals where he had motor issues and finished 3 rd behind a Yamaha and a 60 mercury. At every other race Craig’s first lap from the dock start to the end of the lap was faster than the SST 90/60 tunnels. I would not be surprised if today’s top running T850 boats even faster.
There have been posts about people running larger motors on the Small MOD VP hulls and the small tunnels. The speeds aren’t much different to the old SE class. The kilo and mile speed record for SE was in the 90 mph range. The record for SST 60 is 93 mph. Obviously a Sport C tunnel at 80 plus mph is dangerous!
This was Jakes speedcat with a 49 OMC. I believe the original boat may have been a MOD VP and Dave removed the center pod??
