This boat is NOT a 74 model....it is a VERY ORIGINAL 68 or 69 model with its original front seats and rear cushions. Original dash layout .
Even has the original plastic Checkmate name plates on the sides. These early Checkmates with their double side walls were built VERY well. Kennedy Boat splashed the 16 footer and called it their Marlin model. The Kennedy hulls were not double sided like the Checkmates. It must have an interesting history to have lasted this long and still be original.

WITH SOME WORK THIS BOAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FELLOW LAKE RACERS!

I've had a lot of experience with the V Series Checkmates, MX Series Checkmates, Deltas, VooDoos and Critchfields.
First off there is a BIG WEIGHT difference between the race versions and the production models.
So I am talking about a lake runner boat not a race boat.

I don't recall ever seeing a V-141 Checkmate as original as this one.
Most of the V-141 Checkmates ran 4 Cylinder inline Mercurys. OMC had the 55 hp big foot triple.
The Mercury was also a big foot.
This hull is a non pad hull and VERY difficult to drive. Allison had pads on there hulls and Checkmate added pads on their 70's MX series.
For me the V series hull was safer to drive than the MX series. You could fly the V series and control it, while the MX would catch a wind gust and dart to the side or blow over backwards.
Back then there were no set backs, no SST60 motors, no nitro cases and no 90 hp Yamahas.

I would put an 8 to 10 inch pad on this boat. Run a 4 to 6 inch set back and run an oval port, big carb, 15 inch, nitro case. yamaha/rude.

Do you know what kind of speeds and weights that the race versions of the mx13 would have been Don?

We were pretty happy with our Mx-13 setup with a big block 75hp Mariner with a 4" setback, nose cone and 26" laser prop. Ran high 50's and would touch 60mph early/late in the year. We built it for a heavy motor when restored and the boat now has an inline 6 115hp merc on it LOL

I had a new comp centre steer MX13. It weighed 230 lbs. I ran two different motors on it. An Mercury 80 hp short shaft and later I put the 80 power head on a 1250 BP mid with the 1:50 BP gear case. The 80BP was a great looking motor but a could get a BP prop small enough to get it to go. I ran low to mid 60's with the 80 Mercury.

In the late 60's there was a fellow racing a green V-141 Checkmate in the Wild Cat races. Normal production hull just like the one for sale.
He ran a 100 hp Mercury short shaft and ran mid 60's with it.

This is a Kennedy splash of a V-161 .
Similar hull only it is the 16 foot version.
Wonder if it would be a descent DRAG BOAT?
