Now this small aluminium has the right design and is cheap enough that you could spend some extra money in bracing,

Aluminum is a must...steel is much to heavy. You need a 14' starcraft wayfarer. Or the bottom half of a Critchfield....

If you're going to abuse it, what would you buy, welded or riveted?

Here is the information on how they turn a small aluminium boat into a dinghy racer. It is a lot of time and money. They use only the shell of the original hull and modify it. That being the case I think it is more important to start with a hull will the bottom design and hull length that would work. That is why I like the $150.00 boat on an earlier post. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-canoe-kayak-padd ... nFlag=true

I do like the Starcraft if I was going to a large hull.

I really like the Wolf Frontier models...these boats are built in BC.
The prices start at $2700.
Sizes start at 12 feet.
They have some of the features needed for a raceboat already in the boat.

Not a tin boat, but this 10 foot fiberglass is interesting.

I picked up my tinnie last weekend, an alumacraft 1448 MV, it has a 20" transom it's rated for a 25 HP but never been one to under power a boat. Do you guys think a twin 40 OMC short shaft would work on this?

Good score Mike
Get out the welder, brace that transom and slap on a Tohatsu 50 short shaft... YeeHaw
You might want to consider a hydraulic steering damper. Mercedes damper from and ML350 works nice.

That's good news Tom. It's a good thing I have an OMC twin short shaft 60 on hand. If a Tohatsu 50 would good to go then my 60 will be fantastic. Do you think the tiller handle from my triple 60 will bolt on?

I'm no expert on OMC tiller handles but TunnelV should know, he did a retrofit.
