A very interesting kit for mercury 650XS and other similar 49 short shaft models.....5 inch extension kit made by mercury marine. The complete self contained kit changes your 15 inch motor to a 20 inch long shaft just by removing the gearcase and installing the extension kit. NO modification are required to the motor and it can be converted back to a short shaft by just removing the kit.
I have seen pictures of similar kits on 1500XS short shaft motors.
I was not the one that discovered this kit...Tim Topping found it.

The key factor is you use your original motor. You keep all the original parts.
The kit contains:
A 5 inch extensions for the drive shaft, water tube, shift rod, exhaust if needed.
5 inch studs to bolt the lower unit onto the midsection and for the trim tab
5 inch midsection extension
