http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-JOHNSON-STI ... _38wt_1170It is a good time to have a refresher about these nitro cases and the different part manufacturers. We have had a lot of bad experiences with the new parts.
[1] this one is an original case. The second version of the case has the zinc anode in it. Both are very good NEW. If they were used and run on a tunnel SE. they likely need a reseal. This is NOT a SST 60 case. The SST 60 has the different shape and nose cone. The shift dog is larger. For a T boat this is the preferred case. These cases were removed to install jet drives most of the time.
[2] The older USA made cases are better. The next parts were made in Mexico and the new parts are China. The China ones are junk. Everyone has had problems with the carriers and we just had a SST 60 shift dog break on a low hour case.
If you are rebuilding your case
- talk to Mike Hooper and pay the extra money for a billet carrier. It is legal in T and they do not fail.
- Avoid the China made parts.
- you do not need to shift gears in the case. Lock it in forward and start it in gear. Some are using a spacer instead of the reverse gear. Some like it others prefer to have the gear.
- if the parts are new you can heat treat the gears and prop shaft. It does improve their strength.
- make sure it is shimmed correctly. some cases are too tight and the case tightness can make a 2 to 3 mph difference in the top end speed.
- for T you don't need super light gear lube. A good lube is fine. Just check it often.
