There were two in Ontario Paul Orchard and Troy Wolfe had them.
Here is a picture of one:

They are much smaller compared to a Speed Cat or Mirage Tom Cat 11

That yellow Hydro Racer would be perfect.

Currently we do not have an tunnel classes. Adding the tunnel to our junior level adds to the options. The bigger the net the more fish you catch. Same principle applies here. If one or more of these entry classes grows then we need to be flexible and allow that group have their own race.
The dinghy class will be successful right from the start. I is a versatile boat that can be used in so many combinations. Plus it has the advantage cost wise. It will be the first V pad hull of this size on the market. It is going to be quick!
Back to the tunnel. I think we should stay within the motor size limit of D stock outboard. IF a stock 50 hp can run 75 mph on the oval that is fast enough. I saw Troy's tunnel and Paul's tunnel [when Mike Hooper owned it]. I would like to look at one again. Rather than go smaller maybe have a SST 45 size tunnel that like junior T that you can use initially with a smaller motor and then go to a larger one in later years using the same boat. Grouping different size motors in the same tunnel class is not a problem provided the boats are similar in size.

This is a 25 hp class.....notice they run both the SO race motor and a production 25 hp motor on the tunnel in the same race.

An SST 60 or nitro case bolts right on to an OMC SST 45 mid section. You only need to cut short and lock the shift rod in forward [drive shaft may need to be shortened]. You can put 2 cylinder OMC gears into an SST 60 case .

Some education on small tunnels.

Small low horsepower tunnels react a little different compared to a V hull and much different compared to a high powered Mod V hull.
Up to 55 mph most people with racing driving skill find it TOO easy. The boat is so stable and so predicable that they become overconfident. Get the same hull over 65 mph and it is a different story. They still have that stable feel, but are not predicable .
They blow over, stuff and barrel roll . You cannot be a rookie driver and start off with a super fast tunnel. YOU WILL GET WET!!
It you race in an SST class for a period of time and race competitive with the top boats, you will get wet at some point and you will break a lot of equipment.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TUNNELS....THEY LOOK DIFFERENT!

When you look at a SST 45 compare to the overseas tunnel they look different. The tunnels in stock outboard look different.
Most of it has to do with the top deck.
The overseas tunnels have a lower deck. The hulls are similar with both having large set back from the sponsors to the transom.
Dillon offers different decks with their boat plans.

The Stock Outboard tunnel is very simple and easier to build for the novice builder compared to a hydro. They don't have the large set backs. The ability to shift body weight eliminates the need for set backs and power trim. These hulls are lighter, quicker and not predicable. They run much faster with the same size motor.

For a junior tunnel we have the 2 styles to choose from. I like the Sport C hull, but I think the Stock Outboard hull maybe better.
It is less costly, better for learning driving skills, it can be a J boat where as the Sport C style would have to be AX class.

Have you checked with the Elsey's? They had a mold for something similar I thought

Here is a hull Scott built. Scott is in Toronto. It is 10 feet long. It would be good to test this hull with an 15 or 20 hp to see how it performs.

QUOTE; The original (and the larger one in the picture too) is 10ft. I have the instruction booklet and templates, but made some changes that make the hull work a lot better. Who are you associated with in regards to racing? Wait... its "Houndog"? If so, we've talked and should further about this as a class hull.
Scott (vwfreak)

The deck could be easily changed to look like a modern A stock hydro and it could be a kneel down boat.
We may find that Scott's 8 foot works as a J and the 10 foot as an AX.

Had a long winded message and timed out I guess..? Short description this time..

Boat #1 7'4" long. Reduced by 20% in size overall from the orig plans. Shortened 8", sponsons raised to create a shallower tunnel, added a center section with a step and a pad, cockpitarea / dash moved aft, jackplate, etc... Not even close to the original. The hull was never designed for me to fit into, but my shorter test pilot chickened out that day.. It flies just like the big ones. I couldn't have been happier with the results of my changes to the design!

Boat#2 8ft long. Also reduced overall by 20% from the original plans. Relocated dash/ cockpit and added a shallow center section to help generate lift that the original design struggles with. Sponson depth was left alone, so it still a true tunnel hull and corners unlike anything I've ever driven. This would make for a great entry level
kids racer. Being only 8ft, it's easy to build in a basement or garage in three separate pieces and no scarf joints to stress over.

YEP, an 8 foot tunnel with a modern Stock Outboard deck and cockpit [kneel down]. A 60 lb driver. A i5 hp 4 stroke outboard with a Ron Hill prop. I bet Ron would supply the props. This is one time the rev limiter of the 4 stroke helps because it will control the speed. ALL NEW TO STOCK OUTBOARD and a good option to get new juniors interested.

How about the 10ft version? I'd sure like to be able to race one these hulls after owning the first one almost 20 years ago, but I sure don't want to be doing it on my knees..

There is plenty of room for a foot throttle in the larger version. If this new tunnel class is being sold to potential racers as a cottage toy too, let them have a seat. Just my opinion, but I think making it a kneel down hull for the bigger class will scare people away. A detachable steering wheel and a seat are much more inviting when going for a rip at the cottage.

Rick (Dok) has a Yamaha 30hp that he has offered to let me use and test with next spring. I think that will be a good combo. I built this hull for a Mariner Magnum 40hp, but will try the 30 first.

What engine sizes are you thinking of using? 25, 30, 40+?
