The intention of the class.
It is both a beginners class for 14 year olds wanting to enter T Class and for older people.
It is an OUT OF THE BOX Class for 30 hp motors both 2 stroke and 4 stroke.
The new Green motors are encouraged…That is the “ G” in GT30.
It is a class based on horsepower and not cubic inch displacement.
The minimum boat length is 11 foot 5 inches and the minimum boat, motor, driver weight is 550 lbs.

There are two ways to look at the class.
[1] If your 14 years old , under 135 lbs. and plan to move up to T750 or T850.
Buy a normal weight 13 foot T750-T850 boat. You will not require another boat when you move up. You will be competitive in GT30 and still be close to the minimum weight of 550 lbs. The longer boat will be easier to drive.

[2] If you’re interested in remaining in GT30 and want more of a challenge then go with the shorter 11’ 5” boat.
The shorter boat may save 20 to 30 lbs . So you can be heavier, plus it is much more of a challenge to drive.

So Green isn't a requirement? That will help keep costs down and engine availability up...

Correct. The Green motors really do have an advantage because they do have more power and you can buy new.
Here is a comparison report I found :
One data point you should consider is displacement. The E-TEC displacement is 35 cubic inches. The Mercury is 32 cubic inches. If they were both 2-strokes or both 4-strokes that 3 cubic inches wouldn't make much difference. However, to produce a power curve like a 2-stroke, a 4-stroke needs about 20 to 25 percent more displacement than a 2-stroke. In the case of a 4-stroke, about 42 cubic inches would provide a close match to the 35 cubic inches of the E-TEC. The Mercury is about 10 cubic inches short of that target.

So you can run your Elgin.

I know you guys are trying to find a candatate for the gt30 boat... How hard would it be to add a removable plug to the chritchfield mold So it 11.5' long? Paul could start making gt 30 boats.

Way ahead of you. That was one reason I got the TOO WEAK Critchfield. One thought is to make a Mini Critchfield that looks exactly the same only 12 feet long.

So what would be an engine of choice here?

Mark, obviously if you can afford it. The new 30 ETEC or the Tohatsu 30 4 stroke. Other than those two new ones, I really do not know. The 30 hp OMC you got is like the ones they race in APBA, so it has possibilities, Is yours a 2 cylinder or a 3 cylinder? I have both a 30 yamaha and a 30 mariner. I heard the 30 Suzuki is good. DOC likes Elgins and LC likes Chyslers. I will likely run the Mariner because my 30 Yamaha has a nose cone on it and nose cones are not allowed. If you look at the Winrace videos you see a lot of Yamahas, Mariners and Tohatsu in the small horsepower classes. You don't see OMC because they are not common over there. I hope you get the Delta.
