from what i'v gathered the 60merc is comparable performance wise to an sst45. the sst60 is still the best motor available.. untill Geiger and i get that 60ci billet v6 running.. then look tha fuck out..

Boomer, From what I saw at the shop the other day that looks to be entirely possible! Geiger has an awesome setup.

As for the Merc 60, I'm really looking forward to seeing Tom's boat run at Waterford. Hoping for a pre season update soon. ;)

Anyone that thinks that a Merc SST60 is comparable to an OMC SST 60 are playing with themselves. Here in AU a 2 cylinder 60hp Suzuki is faster than the SST60 Merc. F4's in AU only do just over 65MPH.

The positive side is Mercury is still providing new race motors. The 60 hp Mercury 4 stroke does not need to be compared to an SST 60 or a Yamaha 70CES. It races in its own class and all the motors are the same. It is a competitive 65 mph class and there are good boat counts. The class is a success. I wish it did run in Canada and the USA.
The problem here is there are lots of old equipment and the new packages are costly..over $20 thousand. In Europe they have raced and developed green classes for the new motors.
There is far more interest in boat racing over there than here. They will spend the money on the new equipment.
In our T750 class we have our first Mercury 60 4 stroke running this season. Tom has the motor mounted on the rapid craft and ready to test. The class has multiple motor makes in the class. It is going to be a test and race season for Tom. His motor has a cubic inch advantage, but he has weight, horsepower, and 4 stroke performance characteristics to over come.
Problem the 4 stroke faces when racing 2 stroke motors.
The 2 strokes will turn more rpm to take advantage of the boat becoming lighter as it goes faster. It can do this without hurting the acceleration. Example: a race prep 60 hp OMC will develop 65 to 67 horsepower and turn 7200 rpm on a T750 boat. That gives the boat both mid range and top end. The 60 4 stroke has a 6300 rpm limit. When it races on its own they all perform the same. Against the T750 OMC there is a challenge. Tom needs to prop his boat to accelerate with the OMC and still have top end.
