Ok, so I know I have to cut this thing back to make it legal. What would you guys do? Cut the top back the required amout? (I still need to know how far back to do it) or cut the top right off and make it like the critchfields? The top overhangs 11" from the back of the seat.

Up to you! But what would I do?
I think it's useful to be able to look behind you. Especially when you're probably never going to use reverse. I thought this boat looked SO cool.

Kevin, the easiest fix is to just modify the cell area. There are several pictures on this site of Scott Whittington's boat. Basically you only need to remove the top portion above your head. So you could just cut that part off down to the level of your ear and then go straight. It will provide you the best protection as well. That is a 3/4 cell as shown in the rules.
You can always remove more later if you want too.

Ok, thanks guys. I love the look of that one on S&F. It's got me thinking... Thanks Don for the email on modifying.

Just remember, this is a raceboat. Safety first.

After some cut and paste, here's what I've come up with. That hatch was originally a Critchfield one that I cut in a few places and pasted together. The sides look a little tall on it and kind of bug me a bit but I don't really want to cut more off the boat. Maybe once it's painted to match the boat it will look much better. The height of the back of the hatch is actually the same height as the original though. I marked approx where I'm going to cut the rest off the back with tape to match the back of the boat. The boat looks a lot different now...
