Doug we actually thought/hoped it was a 21" at first. but then when we found out it was a 17" and started thinking about it, the geometry of the of the 17 allows the hyd cylinders to have less force on them and with that in mind have a better chance that the cylinders wont fail or seep while driving in the water or on the trailer. one big concern.
so i think its good only being 17" but not for setback reasons.
The only issue I see is that as you raise the porta lift you are decreasing your setback. Therefore 17" setback full down, As you start trimming up your 17" setback keeps decreasing which will change the weight distribution and perhaps performance?
What if you installed a 4" or 6" hydraulic jack plate on your porta lift. Now you could play with optimum setback and then still have some vertical height adjustment. When you are coming into a shallow are you will even have more vertical lift?
