The idea started in 2019 with some major builders of aluminum Jon Boats putting a small tunnel in the last few feet of their flat bottom Jon Boat. The advantage was you could run the motor higher and that was better for shallow water. The boats also got on plane quicker and were faster. When they extended the tunnel all the way to to bow, they called those models channel bottom Jon Boats.
The small boat enthusiasts saw the performance advantage and are starting thinking of projects .
The flat bottom Jon hulls aren’t the best for turning on a racecourse. A tunnel bottom seems like a good addition.
