87 would make more power than 91 if knock were not an issue and if the energy density of 87 was greater.

All I found about energy density numbers was 32 MJ/L for 87 octane gasoline, dropping to 31.2 with 10% ethanol.

Decades ago I ran propane engines on a dyno. We always got less HP than the equivalent gas motor. With a 'carb' propane enters the cylinders as a gas and reduces the amount of space for air. Less air, less power. It might make equal power with direct injection. We also so a surprising amount of knock at high rpm. Less cooling from fuel evaporation?
