The late 1960's and early 1970's showed major improvements in OPC racing. V bottom hulls with pads and tunnel hulls appeared. FE was very similar to T850. The Allison hulls that ran in the early 70's are the same design as those boats raced to-day. The introduction of the 49 cubic inch, 3 cylinder in 1968 changed the class. All of these motors from 1968 to 1974 had the large gear case. The speeds increased from approximately 45 mph in 1968 to approximately 55 mph in 1974. The 75 hp model with the new nitro case in 1975 increased the speeds to the mid 60's.
The racers ran out of the box motors in the family classes. Most racers purchased their motors at 40% off direct from OMC. They could purchase a new motor every year and sell their old motor.
The 1974 FE boats were faster and handled better than the VP75 class boats racing to-day. They would be competitive with most T750 boats, but their extra weight and no power trim would be a disadvantage.
