Need some info

Looking at building a class 7 boat to run OPA along with our class 6 boat.

I have a line on a 1989 21 Checkmate.

1. how is the build on these boats? Should I expect it to need stringers, floor and transom
2. How much power will be required to run 60mph. 60 is the speed limit for the class

1989 should be a Starflite, no pad on the bottom but generally as well built as any of that vintage. For class 7 I would think you would want something pretty fresh or at least gone through?

A healthy 150/175 should push it 60 I would think, a 200 would be a little more versatile and probably easier to prop though. Just my opinion I'm no expert in class 7 racing lol.

Our 91 Starflight goes just over 60 with 200 BlackMax. May be better off with Challenger type hull, the Startflight is pretty low in the back, might sink in the 8 footers at the mouth of the St Clair, we almost did. Check the transom and the deck behind the back seat for cracks. You coming to St. Clair this weekend?

Just for a frame of reference for speed / power this 21 Superboat with a 175 merc claims 60ish. It sounds like this puts you in the wheelhouse.

Thanks guys. The price seems right. We are off today for St Clair. Bad news is that our regular class 6 boat is still spread across the Mechanics shop. Good new is that the boat owner has a spare 26 velocity...... a little shy on horse power but we will be there!
