As the 2 stroke runs it creates negative pressure in the crankcase as the piston is on its way to TDC, on its way to BDC positive. Less crankcase area means less lag between the positive and negative hopefully opening the reed valves sooner allowing more air/ fuel in through the carbs during negative pressure and more air/fuel through the ports on the positive. Thats the way i understand it anyways.
