i had this question asked. I have no idea. The sender says the two blocks are the same. The 40 hp cannot be made into a 60hp. The 40 hp has a small lower unit and comes in a 15 inch midsection. TRUE?? Possible? These motors have been around for a few years and there are parts motors out there. I am sure someone would have done the switch before now. Or this fellow is on to something. If doable I for one is interested it how it ran.

The motors are 864 blocks. I cannot find a 15 inch 40 hp? Some pictures look like 15's but there all 20 inch.

Don,

From what i had researched before i THINK they are all 20 inch mids, the 40 -60 share the same big gearcase, the 60 has a different tuner.

it is unfortunate that they are not available with a better lower for lighter boats.

Thanks guys for the input. The 30 hp E-TEC is the highest hp model I can find with the short shaft version. There was a VooDoo up north with an E-TEC but I don't have information on how it ran. Down the road as the older motors become less popular with the racers I can see us using a custom mid and lower unit that racers can mount different makes of power heads .
Similar to what Bass manufactures. Then we will see E-TEC engines.

Here is one for sale.
The large gear case would hurt, but, power wise these are said to perform as good as a 70 hp two stroke on the same hull.

Looking at the mid it looks unlikely you could shorten it to 15 or 16 inches.

Lower unit looks just like a 70hp large case. I wonder if the bolt pattern is the same. Could maybe bolt a nitro to it?

From what I've read on other forums, the Etec 60 is not as strong as the older OMC 60/70hp 3cyls. Most of that comes from reports by Whaler Classic/Sport 15 owners on continuouswave.com, as they re-power older OMCs to newer engines.

Since I own a 15 foot Classic Whaler I had read some of the comments.
I based my comment on this thread on replies similar to this one;

Those E-TEC 60 numbers are very similar to the numbers I get with a 2003 Yamaha 70 on my 15 Super Sport. Looks to be a strong 60

Now you can be totally correct. The performance is equal to a 70 Yamaha but not equal to the 60 or 70 OMC motors. Set up means a lot on every boat so this is likely the reason some perform better than others. All seem to agree the 60 E-TEC has a lot of punch and that is very important if you were racing.
