This generation loves to generate horsepower in small motors using computer software and other home developed and aftermarket parts. To get these people boat racing we need to have a few classes that offer them this opportunity.
The small horsepower modern, high tech motors are ideal for this application. These models have been around for several years now and there are many used ones for sale at reasonable prices.

Here is an example of mod chip for Tohatsu motors.

In my view we need a company like Bass [they make racing midsections and gear cases] to supply a universal mid on which you can mount a number of different power heads and a gearcase. This gives the racer a platform for their motor.

I bet if we mocked up a motor sitting an ETEC or 4 stroke power head on a current Bass "D" tower and gearcase and had it on display at the TIBS booth if would get a lot of interest.

This is nothing new... you can do all that in PRO (like Mike Cory's new 125cch.)

500ccH would suit the motors you speak of. 4 strokes get an cc advantage... in 500ccc it is 250cc extra, so 750cc... do pretty much whatever you want as long as it's less than 750cc. Computers, trim, sit down, lay down, kneel down, computer controled or manual control expansion pipes, you dream it an dyou can do it pretty much. You can even make your own motor if you want. I've seen many motorcycle engines converted to boats. These are already legal classes. Hydros, runabouts and tunnels. There are only a hand full of rules in pro group... basically:

1. one outboard motor.
2. 2-cycle or 4-cycle reciprocating engine.
3. Superchargers are not allowed.
4. A motor may have no more rotary valves than cylinders.
5. Propulsion must be by water propeller.
6. Propellers must push, not pull.
7. The propeller shaft to drive shaft angle may not exceed 100 degrees.
8. Any non-pressurized liquid fuel is permitted.

agreed though... a Bass unit under ANY stock powerhead would turn a lot of heads at a show. I'be asked people for many years to make a "kit" for 10-30 hp motors. You could sell a lot of them I think.

The "KEY" is stock. PRO has been around for years. These guys start with a stock car like the 1.8 honda and make something out of it. They would start off with a stock 30 hp ETEC or 4 stroke outboard and make something out of it. I know Dave Scott was trying to get modifying software for the Green 2 stroke 50 hp Tohatsu to make it more racy. I don't know enough about these aftermarket chips as to how much they change the motor. Some software company will develop software packages for the outboards. Given the opportunity these tech racers will get 100 hp out of a base 30 hp motor. We will add new and different thinking racers and a new breed of race fan. If this happens the Brian and Brian announcers will need to be re-educated.

Just thinking...
If one of our site viewers was good with photo shop and could make up a picture of a modern powerhead on the Bass mid.
I could enlarge the picture into a poster for display at TIBS.

You know you can buy a Tohastu 50 fully shrouded stock powerhead on a bass mid right? Or with adapter plates for Mercurys. What's to photo shop?

FYI, these cost LESS than the fishing version, haha. I think, haha. About $6000.

The current Tohatsu/Bass motor is a 50D [old non green] powerhead.
To get interest..photo shop a 30 ETEC cowl instead of the Tohatsu on the tower.

Interesting timing..
On another race site there lately has been a lot of talk about SST45. Talk about being competitive, about part shortage, about reduced boat counts and overall reduced interest level in a class that was the largest OPC class.
SST45 is an OMC class and Sea Way supports the class by providing new parts.

With all this going on you would think......MAYBE WE SHOULD TRY RUNNING AN ETEC 50 HP INSTEAD OF THE OLD 45 cu. in. 2 STROKE MOTOR? Their smarter than me so they likely tried it and it failed. The 60 hp Four stroke Mercury running in Europe [F4] is very costly and not racy enough. The problem maybe STOCK FISHING MOTOR! We know Mercury knows how to improve performance and still be green. The SST200 motor has greatly improved with each new model.
