Comparing the comp models to regular production, I can see they run more stingers and no core, no floor and probably a lighter deck. If a guy wanted to take an old rotten Vking or something similar and try to modify it for drag racing could you pull the core material all out and replace with stringers? Are the hulls the same shape or modified for racing?

Same shape i'v heard of people pulling the core out and laying down some 1708 instead replacing the core.. I wouldn't want to lake run in one like that

Ya...I think you'd need a lot of material particularly in the pad area to have enough strength. I'm sure it's slightly easier to build it without core but I can't see it being any lighter.

So the weight savings on a comp model is with the lighter deck and eliminating the floor. I wonder why they didn't just put a core in them if there is no difference in weight?

No idea....but core isn't heavy compared to plywood stringers lol...and there isn't that much core in them anyway.

Core hardly weighs anything. At least I don't think it weighs anything. This site says 4.5 -16 lb per cubic foot.

How much core would their be in a Vking? My estimate is less than 100 lb
Or is it the resin that's added to the core that adds weight?

depends on when it was built :lol: you dont have to put in a full core. i would want some in the pad and up maybe a foot on either side of the pad.. then i would do stringers the same way Rfotes did on his vector.

This is how my core was laid up, but I went with a floor and 2 stringers to keep the boat rigid.

I never saw any of the comp streams other than the VooDoos. The materials available now are much better [stronger and lighter compared to the 80's] The light comp VooDoo's weighed in at 150 to 160 lbs. Some broke in half very quickly....MOST! A few comp VooDoo I saw in the early 2000s were still together and still running. It all depended on the lay up, where it was raced and who raced it. I had a lot more experience with Checkmates. The early comp ones 1967 to 1972 held up better than their 73 to 75 comp boats.
