Hi folks, new to the site and looking for assistance. Running a 86 75hp Merc long shaft on a Checkmate MX13 presently (father and son project boat). We have it raised and running 55mph GPS presently but a little hard to hang onto!

Just lucked out and purchased 1980 Johnson Stinger 75hp 15" and want to setup for all around performance. Looking for advise on setup, and help sourcing power trim and a prop. Any comments and assistance appreciated. This is a two seater and not looking to set it up for absolute top end only...

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated!
Located on Gloucester Pool in Muskoka

Thanks Rob

If it's anything like our MX-15, I would say you need to do some work to the hull.
These have a rounded keel which is not the greatest for high speed handling.
Perhaps you would consider installing a pad on the bottom.
Also, make sure your transom and structure are solid.

Good luck with it and play safe.

Got any pictures? I've got the same hull, with a 75 mariner big block, and we love it. The stinger should be a large improvement on our motor because of the 70ish pound difference between them. The boat should have a much better centre of gravity in corners and a better sitting angle in the water. I'm running a 24 and 26 pitch lasers and can swing up to a 28 chopper. You should be in the 22-26 pitch range depending on rpm and height of your motor. I wouldnt worry about touching the hull personally, it's what I call a soft pad. No sharp strakes on the edges of the pad, it just blends into the rest of the hull unlike the critchfields and deltas.
