Has anyone here lightened a flywheel from a late model 56 cu in omc (oval port)
I have an idea these flywheels are cast, they are pretty heavy and wondered about making it a touch lighter.
I don't want to go changing the flywheel and all the gubbings under there.
But a touch lighter might give it a bit more zing for pull away.
I know it wont idle as good as a heavy one, but these are VERY heavy for a small motor.

this is the type of flywheel I want to lighten if its possible.

the 1972 49ci had a 9 lbs flywheel that fits in place of the stock 10 lbs one. I have also seen them turned/chamferred down on the top outer ring so the ring gear is left with 1/4" teeth.

the 1972 flywheel from the old 49cu in wont go on my engine without lots of mods.
different underneath the flywheel.
the older 56 cu in ,yes they could go on those but not on these ones.
different stator altogether.

the later sst60 should be the same as my flywheel, I have not seen any of those cut yet.
some sst60 have flywheel with teeth about 1 inch thick.

some of the older ones were either alloy with the steel inserts or a steel flywheel.
I am pretty sure this one is made of cast iron .

lightening it was just a thought, and just a pound lighter is not worth the hassle.

probably best left alone until I find someone who has done one of these very same
wheels and see what their results were/are.
But if only a pound I wont bother.
