The Checkmate is not special, but the short shaft 1000 Mercury is.

After the 99 cubic inch 125 hp came out in 1967 it was the race focus up until the V6 Mercury arrived. To many who raced in the Wild Cat Races, FI and SI the 89 cubic inch 1000 Mercury was the better of the two. It didn't break and would turn more RPM than the 99 motor.
With the right gearing and prop selection they were very competitive with the non factory sponsored 99 motors.

i'm still trying to get paid for that boat. :roll: it had a yamaha 150 on it when i had it and "needed a transom" at that time also...
