The 1998 model of the 59 cubic inch Mercury is said to be the best of the 59 motors. Not many short shafts ever come up for sale. The T guys that raced them were competitive until the OMC 56 rules came in. These motors do not blow up well. Most could not be rebuilt with just over sized pistons most need sleeves. To find a good one is difficult. The good news is the southern US boys with the help of Jeff Dunn supplying them with replacement high compression 160 to 180 wiseco pistons are building 80 to 100 reliable hp out of these motors. With 160 compression pistons in a 1998 60 hp, it is easy to get 85 hp. The 40 hp 59 motor does not have the same sleeves. They can get 80 hp with that block.

THE KEY IS.....IT HAS TO BE A 1998 60 HP!

Based on the decals...it is not a 1998 60 hp, 59 cubic inch.....it is a 52 cubic inch 60 hp
