There is a lot of posts on this site, especially about the inboards. There are two very good videos of Bert's CRASH [H-773]. The one from inside the boat shows how fast an accident occurs and how calm the driver was in getting out of the boat. Drivers are required to pass capsule tests.
I was very impressed with the capsule tests done by the inboard group when we raced SST60. They spend all the time needed to make sure each driver was confident in getting out of their capsule. The DUNK tests done at the OPC race sites were not as good.

Interesting as that is NOT a CBF sanctioned event and HRL is NOT an associated club of CBF.
And Bert is the Vise President of CBF. Hmmm.....

Glad to see he's okay!!

HRL does put on or is a partner in all of the inboard races. In this Event.

Our organization is the Niagara Frontier Boat Racing Association, Inc. and are governed by the Hydroplane Racing League, and partake in a joint sanction with the Canadian Boating Federation.

HRL.....POSITION

1.2- HRL has the authority and knowledge necessary to organize and present
Hydroplanes races in Canada and the United States.

1.3- Before an event, HRL will publish an official information bulletin to the
necessary teams. HRL has the right to create a special event that will count towards the
championship.

If you get the opportunity to go to an inboard race....I am sure it is time well spent. HRL put on a good show, lots of speed, noise and spray. Unlike F1 and Indy cars where the drivers can open the throttle on the straights all the time, inboard hydros are different in the larger horsepower classes. Those boats have more power than they can use unless the water is perfect. It is up to the driver just how hard he wants to push it. Some races are parades, others are head to head the complete race. There is a lot of money spent on equipment and a lot of skill required both in the mechanics and the driver.
Here are examples:

I enjoy reading the Technical Rules for other types on boat racing. It is interesting to learn how they control the rules with their technical rule book. HRL has some good restrictive rules that are easy to enforce. Example the cylinder head rule for GP......you MUST buy the head from HRL.....and they can buy your prop for $3000.00.
Here are the tech rules for HRL:
