Was at Grass Lake today and saw the first Yamato 321 in action in the 302H class. Feedback over the weekend was that the motor has the same top end as the current 302 but lacks the acceleration as compared to the current engine. This engine has some significant changes. The power head is still the same however the front cover is now a part of the air intake on the carb. There are baffles in the cover which to me really reduces the airflow into the carb and motor, in fact there is no fresh air coming into the motor at all. The other big change is in the mid tower. There is now a non removable baffle plate that divides the tuned pipe from the water intake pipe and the tuned pipe flows into a shelf cast in the housing and exhausts out a 7/8" diameter hole. There must be some significant back pressure caused by this design change. All these changes were done to lower the exhaust noise during stadium races in Japan. In speaking with TJ, Ric Montoya is suppose to be getting a shipment of 30 Yamato 321's and the lower units of these motors are going to be swapped out with the current 302H motors. The engines with the original 302 housing will be used for CSH and the 321 engine will be the 302H class engine. If anyone is looking to buy a current 302 contact Andrew Fralick or myself and we can help facilitate the purchase of a 302. No one knows when Ric is getting his shipment. Another alternative is the Yamato 102. Do not overlook this engine, it is still the engine to beat in C if you want to run up front consistently. Most people would rather have a 302 because there is less maintenance on this engine. No points, etc. The only part not readily available for the 102 is primary coils. However, they rarely fail.
