Hopefully it competes well. Would be pretty nice to see the smaller OMCs dust the larger mercs lol. Out of curiosity, what size is the gearcase on those mercs? Is this one of the things limiting this motor from being competitive in 850?

No, the mercury was all ready in before that committee existed. Thanks LC, you are 100% correct.

Kev. to answer your question.. There re 3 different ratios with this motor in stock form. The motor came with 2 to1, when it was a 50 hp, 1.84? or 1.86? and 1.64 when it was 60 hp.
The 2 cylinder mariner also has two ratios 1.86 and 1.71
It most cases the differences is 2 inches in pitch so no big deal with the mariner. It is the same as the 70 CES.
The Mercury will make a big difference between 2 to 1 and 1.64. I think this will help the heavier driver.
Craig F has 1.64 at this point. My long shaft 50 hp is 2 to 1. We need to see how it plays out and if? the other Mercurys show up to race. I am leaving my Mercury as a long shaft in case it doesn't run.
What limites it in 850 is that it is a poor design and weak overal.

What I was asking is the actual physical size. Is it small like the nitro or larger like the big omc case?

Small case

Here is an example

There are actually 4 mercurys that we know of and all of them are bone stock. They should be very close to the 55 mph and could get high 50s with a good prop. The Pro 50 yamaha can run mid 50's as can the Mariner. We have seen both of those combs run. The real competition is the Nissan and Tohatsu 50D . That motor is high performance right out of the box. It even requires premium fuel out of the box. When they compared a TOP Mercury 44XS to a stock out of the box 50D. The 50D was stronger.

So Kevi the OMC 45r will likely beat the 49 Merc, but the 43 Tohatsu motor could be the one to beat. Remember the new current T750 world record is held by a 50D Tohatsu at over 66 mph.

In regards to that 66 mph world record, please keep in mind the weight of their boats. They are
much lighter and somewhat smaller than our Allisons, Critchfields and Deltas. Most of our T-750 racers are around 700+ lbs. We are over 750 lbs. I am guessing the European T-750's are 600 lbs or less. This year I expect the T-750's to be 56 -60mph on the race course. With kilo top end props perhaps 58-62 mph.

I think the majority of the boats will be 55-57 range unless you get one of them magical Elsey props. It will be interesting to see some different motor combinations, perhaps they will bring some more speed with them. I have the kid on a strict diet leading up to race season so maybe we'll be faster this year.

Jake should not be allowed to run that prop until the rest of the group catches up. That being said I think the prop that Todd is working on for me will be as good as Jakes prop and Dave has another one of my props that could be even better. It seems easy to get these boats to 53 or 54 mph. The challenge is to get them to the 57 to 59 mph range. Those props are available for any T racer to test or race with. My Mariner, Tohatsu and Mercury will all be running smaller props likely in the 11 diameter 17 to 20 pitch. DOC has a really nice 11 x 20 that works well on his 70 yamaha. I just hope its a different prop for each motor that works.
