Double gloves - I go in with my full hazmat suit. I did all the floor and floor supports in an afternoon - really hoping to get it fully stripped by the end of this weekend.

I can only imagine the response if we called Ontario Hydro to inquire about getting one of the nuclear radiation hazmat suits :lol: :lol:

Haven't touched a 4" grinder in years.
10000 rpm just creates Diamond dust and blows it everywhere.
I use my my polisher/sander with 7"pad and 40grit sandpaper disk at 1800rpm.
Keep the vacuum hose handy and suck as you sand.
Chews up glass into small strands of instead of Diamond dust.
Leaves a great ruff surface for bonding.
Than I do the smaller areas with my 5" dustless palm sander and 40grit.
No hazmat suits required.

Thanks for the words guys - its fun doing these builds and seeing the progress and improvements that can be made when compared to how some left the factory. If the weather was a little better on Sunday I probably would have been able to get it all ground down smooth but Saturday was a busy day - I got the gas tank pulled out and the foam that surrounded it ( :roll: ) - then I was able to cut out the stringers and start working on all the front cuddy. That won't be going back up there because that is a considerable amount of weight in the front of the boat that I don't want to have.

There were 2 good things I found out this weekend though - number 1 is the boat is actually cored with balsa rather than plywood which is a huge advantage - and fact number 2, its dry!

That's coming along good. Is it common for velocities to be plywood core? Jordan's 30' raceboat was ply but it was an early build.

I'm not sure - I know some definitely were but don't know what stipulated whether it was or wasn't. Just glad to know this one isn't. Hoping to make a dump run sometime soon and know how much weight I took out it.

Mike,

Great new project, I look forward to the progress. It is a remarkably similar project to my (still incomplete) Scarab overhaul. Your enthusiasm will be a good motivator :)

There are some really good threads on S&F about Velocity construction over the years. A member named FUJIMO was one of their production managers for many years and knows everything about them. He posts often so pick his brain as needed. As I understand it, the 22’s, be it race or pleasure, were balsa cored and plywood stringers.

Seems like weight savings is a goal, have you considered foam-core stringers ?

Also, can you do me a big favour and take a couple pics of your transom notch ? I’m planning on adding one to the Scarab and continuing to gather ideas for the best approach.

Hey Matt,

Yeah I've read through quite a bit and taken some of what they've said and a lot of what I learned from my previous builds. Weight savings is "a" goal but not "the" goal so my likely plan is to rebuild with Okoume and epoxy. The boat is cored with balsa and its all dry so I'm super happy about that! I will get some pics of the transom notch next time I'm up working on the boat.

As for updates, I finished grinding (well 98%) finished smoothing and grinding so I'm ready to start making my templates for rebuilding it all. I took all the material to the dump that came out of the boat and I was shocked at how much there was. It is very deceiving how much wet wood weighs but I unloaded 1080lbs at the dump - so I basically cut out 2 of Greg's Allison's lol. The boat feels much lighter now and can't wait to see what it weighs when I get it off the trailer.
