How many of you make sure your trailer tyres are not too old ?
How many think if its got good tread then its safe ?

not many people realise that trailers tyres get way over looked for age !!!

yes there is a life for tyres, car tyres truck tyres and trailer tyres. and its not what many think it would be.

just because you see plenty of tread dont mean much, you need to look at the tyres for their age.
its printed on all tyres that are for road/highway use all over the world .

And when buying a new trailer just because you buy a new trailer dont mean you got new tyres, these tyres
and wheels are often bought in bulk.
you could buy a 2016 trailer with 2014 tyres or even older. you should demand the same year as the trailer or get
a huge discount for having old tyres.

tyres must be changed at 6 years maximum, that's their maximum life for safety as the rubber breaks down.

this you can look up at firestone , Dunlop, Kelly, Fulda , Michelin. micky Thompson etc etc etc.

it can also give the insurance people a good excuse to invalidate your insurance should something go wrong.
its upto you to check the dates on your car and trailer tyres.

a pair of tyres/tires dont cost the earth to replace.
stay safe and check your tyres for age.
to help keep them good , try to keep them covered away from direct sunlight.
sunlight is bad for rubber, it deteriorates faster in direct light from the sun.

and if possible move the trailer as often as possible to avoid flat spots, even an empty trailer can get a set in the tyres !!

Tell that to the tires on the trailer I just sold with my Mod VP.
10+ years old, lots of tread, no cracks, no leaks no issues and I just dragged it 1500 miles @ 85-90 mph from central Ontario to Florida. Tires and bearings never even got warm!!

After 6 years I usually get the die grinder out and freshen up the treads!

Good info - I was worried there for a second. I typically replace my tires after every summer. The algae in Canada is very acidic especial when mixed with lake water. Nasty stuff.

I actually have to agree with this. I just pulled a bowrider home from Florida. I replaced one tire that was bad and the other side looked great. The new tire still looks new, but the other tire was severely worn.

The UV is really hard on rubber for sure. Although, If you keep your trailer inside, I'm sure the tires will last for years.

when it comes to safety I dont joke around.
we can all take the piss on certain things, but our trailers need to be good to get whatever boat we have to and from the ramp nice and safe.

I thought it a bit funny when a brand new boston whaler 22 ft boat was being delivered to the London boat show when 2 tyres on the drivers side blew out and the boat got smashed to bits.
it was on our news around 6 years ago, a few weeks later we heard about the company being taken to court because the safety of the trailer and its OLD out of date tyres were the cause of the accident.
this company is a trailer company who advertise about tyre safety and age !!!!!!

caravans seem to be the biggest problem as they get put in the summer camps then not moved until winter and so on.
this means they get very little usage and the tyres look like new.

I will check later to see if I still have pics of a tyre off my trailer that blew out on the inside !!!
you wont believe how good the outside looks.

Really? On the Jon boat drag race thread you just described helmets and cut suits with the adjective pansy.
