I'm currently thinking about jumping ship so to speak. I'm contemplating a move from the automotive to the marine industry. I'd just like some of your opinions, how things work out in marine. Is the pay comparable? What do you do through the winter months, is there work to keep you busy, or are most on unemployment? I realize there are some marinas that work on sleds in the winter, but not all... Oh, and if anyone needs someone in their shop, I'm looking to move to central or southern ontario if the job is right!! |

Marine is alot cleaner than Automotive but I believe the pay is less. Our techs get layed off in the winter which can be good or bad depending on your outlook. For those reasons it seems to be difficult to find a good marine tech who wants to work. Bmax (Dean) on FBC teachs the marine tech program at Georgian...he may have more insite into the employment situation. |

Very small sample size but a marine tech I know is constantly busy even through the winter months. It took many years though for him to build his own business up with return clients and I am sure it presents its challenges like any would. |

Update: Hired on at ford dealer in Huntsville, start June 3rd. I honestly didn't think I'd be met with the challenges I was to switch over to boats. Ah well, having a separate hobby and career isn't so bad.... |

I didn't want to see a boat at the end of the work day!When I came home to sit on the porch and relax and enjoy the lake view all I saw was work! when I left the marine industry it took about three years before I actuelly wanted to get in a boat and go for a ride! Good choice on the Ford Dealership! I think they are one of the best to work on! |

I used to eat, sleep and breathe motorcycles. Then I spent 7 years in the motorcycle business. I have not ridden in 6 years. |
