To answer your original question, there never was a factory 15" midsection for "fishing" Johnson/Evinrude V4s in "recent" history (i.e late 70s to present). Your options are:

1) Cut-down stock unit. Quite a big project but many have been done, most people go to 16" not 15"
2) Buy a used Taylor marine 16" setup. There's a guy in Ontario who hoards them.
3) SST-100 midsection. This is a factory race V4 mid with hydraulic up/down. 14" and is fundamentally like a Merc Champ 12" midsection setup. They are exceptionally rare and you probably would have to buy the whole motor or perhaps whole entire race rig to get it.

What V4 are you looking to build - 90 degree looper, 60 degree looper, or crossflow ?

I think it was a GORDON family project.

As for performance

Thanks Matt
I have a 1989 140hp I can use. I have heard of a 16" mod being done as well. Who would have the Taylor marine 16" set in Ontario?? I have only seen pic's of a SST100 never in person. If I do decide to put something like this on my Viper the 100 design would be too short for that application. Any other suggestions or info would be great thanks

I will contact the hoarder in question and post if any of the Taylors are available.
Jack Barsh of Full Throttle powerboats cuts the mids, as does another guy on S&F (forget his name, look in the classifieds - he does lots of Mercs - Mike Chapman if I remember correctly ?).

That 89 looper is a GREAT motor to modify for your Viper. Are you looking for any HP parts for it ? I have some race stators I don't need.

Thanks Matt
I would like to do a little more research on power head mods first but I'm interested in a 16" mid to start with. I have been toying with cutting down one I have here to experiment with. I do have another motor I can use on my Viper next season if this project is not ready, but I have to start collecting parts first.
Thanks for contacting the hoarder about the 16" mid.

One 16" Taylor mid can probably be made available, $1600. That's just the midsection, not any brackets or adapter or anything.
If you want it shoot me a PM and I'll link you two up. Keep in mind these are no longer made.

I will be chopping my Johnson 200 GT to 16" this winter. I have a bit of experience doing this but not enough to do it for someone else, I love the looks of the short shaft motors compared to one that is jacked up to the sky.

Hi Sharpeye

I think I will try to cut mine as well....maybe when you do yours you could post some pic's of your work. I have read enough on this subject that I would like to attempt it. I'm lucky to have a welder buddy, a friend with machine shop access and some interested in doing this.
Good luck with your project.
