Matt, first off I want to thank you for posting the yamaha parts on this thread and for helping me locate a motor base plate for my twin cylinder yamaha.
I have been trying to put together a twin short shaft for years after I purchased a NOS power head. I didn't know at that time there were several versions of that power head and my power head was only produced for a year or two. Parts were almost impossible to locate let alone purchase.
THE DRIVE SHAFT ISSUE
I never had a 15 inch twin drive shaft or complete lower unit. I only had complete 6J2 lower units. Two years ago I was ready to mount the motor. It would not mount! Drive shaft was too long. The 6J2 drive shaft will only work on the 70 hp. The two cylinder drive shaft will work on both. There is enough spline on the twin for the 70 hp. I got a new twin cylinder drive shaft from a Canadian dealer using the part number you posted. I now have a complete twin 15 inch lower unit. As for the difference between a 6J2 gear case casting and the twin. Only a minor difference. You can make the alteration very easy.

I've got a Yam 60/70 short shaft leg and transom bracket I would sell, was going to build another short shaft 70hp out of it but not really got the time. Also got the 60hp enduro cowling and all the pull start bits, would make an ideal engine for a thundercat or similar

I have a gearbox too but it's the 15 spline 2.33 ratio not the 13 spline 1.86/1.71 'box

Also got a billet 70ces exhaust for sale, I run one of these on my own engine

Related to this short shaft project, I cut a couple 22.5" driveshafts down to 15" for the 2Cyl. Got them back today from True Gear today who cut the splines. The slightly longer fresh one here is a factory 6J2 (70CES) shaft.

ALL OF THE 70B CANADIAN MODEL SHORT SHAFT PARTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE .

Has anyone every tried a HydroTec cylinder head? For the 70hp, or for any of the Yamaha 3cyls?

Seemingly it's just a copy of the 2 piece 70ces head. There's a couple of billet heads available too, a company in the states makes one and also TSR in Australia, tried the TSR one and it didn't work well
