Riddle me this !!

Last weekend my boat wouldn't get on plane. And when it did with my foot to the floor I ran 65mph ( should do 87)... So I brought er back to the dock and did a compression test (perfect) and tossed new plugs in it. Took er out and she ran fine. Problem solved.... I thought

After giving it some more thought this week and talking to a few people I figured it was a fuel issue. Because last year when idling it would just quite on me if I didn't pump the ball or get on the gas...

So! Are you still with me? Pay attention in the back.

Tonight I take er for a ride. Starts and runs mint. 85 up and down. No issues. Did some cruising. Then up on plane. No problem. Then slow down again and it's barely idling and then quits.... Can't get it started. Done. Tow back to dock.

I changed the low pressure fuel pump gadgets etc, new pump ball at the tank, and new fuel filter / water separator. It starts with my foot on the gas but it idles like crap. Rev it up and it sounds great. Take my foot off the gas and it chugs and eventually quits...

Now what??

There's 4 blots attaching the clamp to the bobs jack. Unbolt then kick.. Problem solved.

Yes. I had the reeds changed. Dave at aims did them last winter and the motor has been great all summer so far. I do believe he installed carbon fiber reeds, but can't recall the name of them...

One potential issue could be a cracked or chipped reed

Reeds are good. Also checked fuel pressure. It's good at 45psi. As well as fuel regulator.

Can get the motor running but idles at 500rpm. Need to stay in the gas to keep it going. When I rev it sounds / runs great....

Been on the phone with Dave a lot today haha thanks Dave!

I'm sure Dave has suggested it on the phone, but how was the fuel when you changed the separator,? did you pour it in a clear glass to see? maybe you could try running a remote tank to eliminate that.
i chipped my reeds a few years back(from a lean sneeze/stalling at idle as i had some water in my fuel) motor ran great but would not idle i had to keep my foot in it to idle and ran like a top off idle still

Yup! Very possible. I have the gas in a clear jar now waiting. But not seeing much. Boat is going to aim tomorrow. Yay! Boating!

Whelp! I drove the boat to Aim yesterday and Dave and I hooked er up to the computer and had a look, did some testing etc etc etc for about 3 hours… all while i stood there like an idiot...

Turns out I had an injector stuck open (yes James Cole you were right, all praise the Holy one James Cole).. which subsequently caused my fuel pump to fail. Dave had all the parts on hand to fix the job and install a new injector this morning. Motor is running mint !

I drove my boat to Dave’s shop yesterday….SUNDAY!... and he worked on the bloody thing right then and there. Who does that?? If he has the time he will do anything to accommodate his customers. I can’t say enough good things about working with Dave at Aim Marine. Thanks again Dave.

Thank you HPBC and all those that lent advice. I was deep into that motor on Friday / Sat but just couldn’t find the cure.

Cheers,
